In June 2006, the North Fond du Lac Police Department started to utilize a Harley- Davidson Electra Glide police motorcycle for patrol operations. In addition to being a highly effective patrol tool, the Motor Unit is used in many special events throughout the community. The decision to add a motorcycle to the patrol fleet was primarily driven by the desire to help reduce vehicle related costs; most notably the skyrocketing cost of gasoline. The Motor Unit was also seen as a golden opportunity to further enhance community relations through increased personal contact with citizens, as well as improving general patrol techniques and traffic education/enforcement efforts.
Currently, one sergeant and two officers are assigned to the Motor
Unit. On June 17, 2006 Sergeant Troy Damsteegt and Officer
Jeremy Sternweis completed the Harley-Davidson Police Motorcycle
Training Program. Officer Donovan Heavener
was previously certified by the State of Washington as a Police Motorcycle
Operator and has 4 years experience as a Police Motor Officer.
Harley-Davidson Motorcycles of Appleton leases a brand new motorcycle to the department on a yearly basis at a low cost. Each year, at the end of the riding season, the Department returns the motorcycle and receives a new motorcycle the next spring.
New Vision Signs & Decals of Fond du Lac donated the decaling for
the motorcycle during the first riding season.
The
police department plans to increase the number of officers trained
and authorized to operate the motorcycle.
