2011 Recycling Calendar

2012 Recycling Calendar

To comply with statewide comprehensive recycling laws the Village adopted a local ordinance that mandates recycling by all residential users.  These regulations ban certain items from landfills and require that curbside collections be conducted of many common recyclable materials.

The Village contracts with Waste Management for the collection of recyclable materials from residential users.  Curbside collections of the materials listed are provided every other week and are done on the same day as the regular refuse pick-up.

Recycle:  PAPER including business forms and envelopes (window type okay);  cardboard (flattened); cereal, detergent, and shoe boxes; paper, junk mail, and file folders; magazines, newspapers, and telephone books.  FOOD CONTAINERS including aluminum, steel, and tin cans; beer, wine and liquor bottles; food and glass jars; milk and juice containers; ketchup bottles and narrow neck plastic bottles regardless of the number on the bottom; pie tins; and soda and juice bottles.

(Do NOT Recycle: clothing; carpeting; hazardous waste; crystal; metal objects such as nails, wire, hangers, or case strapping; paper towels, napkins, facial tissue, disposable diapers, pet soiled paper; plastic take-out trays, wrap, strapping; pyrex or other heat resistant ovenwear; rubber and latex materials; styrofoam; toys; or wax coated products.)

A 64-gallon cart furnished by Waste Management is the approved recycling container.  Recyclable materials may be co-mingled or mixed within the cart.  Larger quantities of cardboard, newspaper, magazines, and mixed paper may be placed in the cart.  Recycling bins must be placed at the curb no later than 6:00 a.m. on the scheduled collection day and must be removed from the curb within twelve (12) hours following pick-up.  The recycling cart should be placed at least four (6) feet away from the refuse container to provide clear access for the garbage truck.

To the greatest extent practical, recyclable materials should be cleaned and kept free of contamination.  Between collections they should be stored in a manner that protects them from wind, rain, and snow.

To enforce the mandatory recycling ordinance the Village will have inspectors conducting spot checks of  refuse containers.  Residents who are found to have recyclable items in their refuse will be subject to warnings and then citations for violations of the mandatory ordinance.  Depending upon the frequency and severity of the violations, fines may range from $25 to $1,000 plus court costs.  Repeat violators may also have their refuse and recycling services suspended.
